A cost-free service available to all UNO Students

About Student Legal Services

Student Legal Services, established in July 2022, provides free advice, consultations, and representation to currently enrolled UNO students. It is funded by student fees, and all communication with the SLSO is completely confidential.

To access and continue using SLS services, students must be currently enrolled and maintain enrollment at UNO. All students are accountable for paying filing fees, court fees, and fines. Any outside attorney legal fees or consultation fees are the responsibility of the students. SLS will not cover subsequent appointments, representation, or consultation fees.

Mission

Provide quality free and confidential legal advice, representation, counseling, education, advocacy, research, and referrals for all students at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. We constantly strive to educate students on their legal rights and tirelessly advocate for their interests.

Vision

The vision of Student Legal Services Office (SLSO) is for equal access to justice through education, information, and representation for all University of Nebraska at Omaha Students.

Every interaction at SLSO, whether within the office or with others, should be conducted with respect and integrity. We take pride in delivering excellent legal and educational services. We foster a collaborative culture of respect in our relationships with other departments, colleagues, and the community. Services Offered

SLS is operated by one attorney and one paralegal, offering free legal advice and court representation in the following areas:

  • Uncontested Divorce/Custody
  • Landlord-Tenant Issues
  • Credit Card/Loan debt Defense
  • Protection/Harassment orders
  • Name Change/Birth certificate markers
  • Misdemeanor Criminal Charges or Traffic Violations
  • Simple Immigration
  • Limited Liability Company (LLC) Formation
  • Writing a Will or inheriting Property under $100,000
  • Notary services

All other legal issues are addressed on a case by case basis.

*SLS is unable to represent students against other students or against the university but can offer referrals in such cases.
