AI is revolutionizing how universities support students on their academic journeys. By integrating generative AI into advising, learning resources, and classroom tools, the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) is leading the charge in leveraging technology to foster student success. Here, we highlight three innovative projects that enhance the student experience with personalized and efficient AI applications.

Custom GPT for Counting Seat Availability

Project Lead: Huai-Mei Furman

Advisors often face time-consuming challenges when manually checking seat availability for high-demand general education courses. To address this, Huai-Mei Furman is creating custom GPTs that will streamline the process, saving hundreds of hours during peak advising seasons. These GPTs will allow advisors to quickly and accurately check seat availability, ensuring students enroll in the courses they need without unnecessary delays. By improving operational efficiency, this tool promises to enhance the overall advising experience and simplify course selection for students.

Enhanced Learner Autonomy with Custom GPT for MLTI 3000

Project Lead: April Paschall

In the Bachelor of Multidisciplinary Studies program, fostering learner autonomy is key. April Paschall’s project involves developing a custom GPT chatbot tailored to the MLTI 3000 Multidisciplinary Foundations Seminar. Designed as a “three before me” resource, the chatbot empowers students to independently navigate course materials, clarify assignment requirements, and access syllabus details. By providing just-in-time information and streamlining access to essential course content, the chatbot reduces cognitive load for adult learners who are often balancing academic with work, family, and other responsibilities. This support structure not only enhances learner confidence and self-efficacy but also promotes self-directed learning and improves the overall academic experience by making learning more accessible and manageable.

Grace Abbott School of Social Work Chatbot

Project Lead: Katie Robbins

Social work students often have multiple points of contact for admissions, advising, and practicum support, which can lead to confusion and inefficiencies. Katie Robbins’ initiative introduces a chatbot to the Grace Abbott School of Social Work website. This AI-powered assistant provides timely, accurate answers to common student questions, such as how to submit practicum learning contracts or locate resources. By streamlining communication and reducing misdirected inquiries, the chatbot increases efficiency for faculty and staff while improving the support experience for social work students.

Bringing clarity, offering support, and increasing comprehension.

That’s what Cecilia Tocaimaza-Hatch, associate professor and department chair, did for her Structure of Spanish students in the first round of the Open AI Challenge.

Cecilia submitted a proposal for a custom GPT that would help students better comprehend Spanish readings by using plain language. She was motivated to implement artificial intelligence in her course curriculum at some level, saying, “I feel it is my responsibility to help students learn how to use this new technology to prepare them for future employment.”

This custom GPT needed to be able to support students in upper-level courses, so it was built to:

  • Provide plain-language explanations of difficult linguistic concepts (i.e. word categorizations and functions in the deep analysis of sentences)
  • Guide students through questions so it prompts them to engage the content deeper, fostering overall comprehension
  • Be an additional source of support for students, one that is available to them 24/7

Motivated to keep learning in her own practice, Cecilia felt excited at the opportunity to implement new technology in her classroom. “I’ve enjoyed learning from Digital Learning to do lots of things… and this was the next thing to learn in order to keep growing,” she said. Implementing this custom GPT felt less intimidating due to the partnership with the AI Learning Lab team.

“Cassie Mallette [Program Manager for the AI Learning Lab] is available to help out and meet people wherever they are,” Cecilia said. “She is very generous with her time and her expertise.” The Division of Innovative Learning Centric-Initiatives offers workshops and one-on-one consultations for those interested in how they can integrate artificial intelligence into their work.

The first round of the Open AI Challenge has officially wrapped, marking an exciting step forward for leveraging AI at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). As part of its ongoing partnership with OpenAI, UNO is facilitating another round of the Open AI Challenge, providing up to 1,000 users with access to the enterprise version of ChatGPT—furthering innovation in integrating AI into classrooms and campus-wide initiatives.

What’s the Open AI Challenge?

In an effort to increase the strategic, creative, and ethical uses of artificial intelligence on campus, the Division for Innovative and Learning-Centric Initiatives (ILCI) has encouraged UNO staff and faculty to submit proposals for how they could use AI in their day-to-day work or in the classroom to do at least one of three things 1) cultivate creativity, 2) enhance engagement, or 3) improve efficiency.

Success & Insights From the First Round

The first round was successful to do all three. UNO faculty and staff used generative AI to enhance learning and productivity in a whole new way. In total, 72 proposals were submitted and approximately 850 ChatGPT licenses were granted: for those with licenses, 81% strongly agreed that it improved their overall academic and work experiences.

For example, some first-round participants chose to use AI as a study tutor for a Spanish course, as a research and writing tool for history papers, and even as an administrative tool to save time across multiple workflows. After surveying users, 88% said that the use of generative AI increased productivity to some level and 90% said that it saved them time each week.

This means that these faculty and staff members got to spend more time in their week working on things that they may not have otherwise had time for– and the majority of participants used AI several times a week or daily.

Looking Ahead: Round Two Has Begun

These numbers barely begin to scratch the surface of the success UNO faculty and staff can have using AI as a tool. The ramifications of creative uses of ChatGPT look like operational efficiency, increased study effectiveness, more focused research, helpful study techniques, and countless other possibilities.

Inspired by the first, the second round of the Open AI Challenge aims to highlight innovative and impactful applications of generative AI at UNO. In the initial round, 92% of participants indicated they would recommend participating in the OpenAI Challenge to others at UNO. Already, 90 individuals have submitted proposals and 987 licenses have been requested. There are limited licenses available, so if you’re interested in obtaining a license, apply on our Open AI Challenge website today.

Artificial Intelligence at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) continues to gain momentum with the increase of AI integration in courses. In September 2024, The AI Learning Lab accepted nearly 50 AI-Powered Teaching grant submissions with 31 grants currently in progress for the fall 2024 and spring 2025 semesters.

The Three Tiers of AI-Powered Teaching Grants

UNO encourages embracing generative artificial intelligence (AI), and providing support for faculty who want to integrate generative AI into their coursework is a top priority for the AI Learning Lab. To help best support faculty, the AI Learning Lab launched a three-tiered approach to AI-powered teaching grants:

Tier One: AI implementation in an assignment: For those looking to incorporate generative AI into their course slowly. Ex. AI as a tool to help assist in translation for a service-learning project.

Tier Two: AI implementation in a module or project: For those looking to teach students how they can use it in future career fields or looking to implement AI into a scaffolded project during the semester. Ex. A module on the ethical and unethical uses of AI in journalism.

Tier Three: For those looking to fully implement AI throughout their course or capstone class.

In awarding these grants, the AI Learning Lab seeks to support faculty members in the implementation process by providing concrete ideas and ensuring that AI implementation is done in a clear and ethical way, teaching students how to use AI responsibly, and giving them future-ready skills. Integrating generative artificial intelligence into the classroom is an important first step that will help students meet the needs of the changing workforce.

“One thing I continuously hear from faculty is that they want to incorporate AI into their course, but they don’t have the time to figure out how and to provide a ton of guidance to students in an already busy semester. That is where we come in,” said Cassie Mallette, program manager for the AI Learning Lab.

“By providing this support and resources for them to share with their students, we’re providing them with a clear approach to AI implementation. When we support faculty, we support students, ensuring that AI implementation will be done in a clear, ethical way that upholds academic integrity and prepares students for an AI-driven workforce.”

How might AI integration in a course look?

With many grants underway, there have already been many success stories:

  • Comparing the use of AI as a tool in business statistics compared to excel to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the tool
  • AI as a tool to practice conversing with people in another language.
  • AI as a practice tool for buying and selling products
  • AI as an assistant in all steps of a research project
  • AI as a tool in social media
  • AI as a peer reviewer for a final project

AI in education isn’t a shortcut, it’s a way to build the skills that will help students learn more, think deeper, and prepare them for a tech-driven workforce.

The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) is preparing to launch an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Learning Lab in the Fall 2024 semester. This will bring many exciting opportunities for the campus to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) in a coordinated capacity with plenty of support available to assist in the efforts of faculty and staff.

About the Lab

UNO’s AI Learning Lab will have four main components:

Component 1

First, the lab will facilitate an Open AI Challenge, an RFP for up to 1000 UNO faculty/staff/departments to gain access to Open AI for specific use-cases.  These use cases may include teaching and learning (for example, you might want to try out a Custom GPT to assist students in your class with studying and preparing for course activities and assessments, similar to a Teaching Assistant), operational efficiency (for example, you might want to deploy AI to answer common questions from prospective students), research, or other activities.  We plan to open the RFP mid-June and submissions will be due late August for those seeking to gain Open AI access for the Fall semester.  For most up-to-date information on the Open AI Challenge, visit innovate.unomaha.edu.

Component 2

Second, the lab will support the UNO community with learning more about AI by hosting faculty development trainings/workshops, offering course/capstone course development grants, updating prompt books, and shaping microcredentials that help to educate and support our campus community and beyond.  These workshops are a continuation of the eight AI-focused workshops the UNO Digital Learning team facilitated in 2023-24, and we were thrilled to see so much interest at these sessions the past year.  The course and course capstone grants are designed to provide funds to faculty who want to infuse AI-related content into their courses to help prepare learners for using AI in their future careers.

Component 3

Third, the lab will plan and implement the first UNO AI Learning Lab Summit in Spring 2025, an event designed to bring together campus leaders, faculty, staff, students, and community members.  The Summit will feature individuals and departments selected through the RFP Challenge as speakers so that we can learn from one another, as well as from outside experts who will provide keynote and plenary sessions.

Component 4

And finally, the lab will create a UNO Campus AI Consortium, a key group of stakeholders from each college, academic affairs, ITS, student success, ILCI, IESS, and other key units to help provide guidance and input to the campus and AI Learning Lab on all things related to AI.  We know that this is a rapidly changing technology with a wide variety of factors for our UNO campus to consider, and we feel that having a dedicated committee to discuss AI and make related recommendations would help position our campus for long-term success.  If you are interested in participating in this committee, please reach out to Myah Lanoux-Nguyen at mlanoux-nguyen@unomaha.edu.

AI Learning Lab Leadership

Day-to-day leadership for the lab will be provided by Associate Vice Chancellor Jaci Lindburg (jlindburg@unomaha.edu) and Instructional Designer Cassie Mallette (cassiemallette@unomaha.edu).
